I'll accept the "direct evidence" part - but whose "perceptions", from what sources? Anyone who has read the Old Testament understands that domesticated pigeons were common long before 400 BCE. (How long? There are many schools of thought - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Composition_of_the_Torah )
