I'm curious, do the ladders contribute to this effect at all? Some amateurish experimentation in Paint suggests that the effect is just as strong without them. (PS I don't have a Twitter account to read through the discussion, possibly it's discussed there).

The arcades are subtly alternatively misaligned if you look very closely.

Overall effect is awesome
