... and then they'd follow up and say "and the Soviets weren't much better than the Nazis". The "Red Army" was truly infamous for massive amounts of alcohol abuse, looting, rape and torture (both among themselves and towards the civilian population), a tradition that was kept alive throughout the ages up until now in Ukraine.
It was done mostly from 1944 onwards, when the Germans had already been defeated in the east front. A huge majority of the German war effort was spent on the east. The US and UK landing in Europe surely sped up things, but the Soviet Union had already won.
I have no sympathy for the current Russian regime, but claiming they weren’t responsible for winning WW2 screams American propaganda.
