A Clock in the Forest (noemamag.com)

A clock meant to run for five millennia would need to be carefully serviced by druid watchmakers. Maybe even need spare parts and lubricants. Are there any plans to train the druids in those specialisms?

Makes me think that instead of tuning a clock to follow a forest cycle via tree rings extractions, it would be kinda cool to maybe genetically engineer a tree with external display of the past time.

One could read a tree optically to found out its age, growth speed throughout the ages and maybe even nutrient availability and balance.

And for humans, how about a smartwatch showing you your biological time and the speed of aging? May be a bit creepy

> Being dimly aware that human beings had learned to tell the age of a tree by counting the rings, the original Counting Pines decided that this was why humans cut trees down.

> Overnight every Counting Pine readjusted its genetic code to produce, at about eye-level on its trunk, in pale letters, its precise age. Within a year they were felled almost into extinction by the ornamental house number plate industry, and only a very few survive in hard-to-reach areas.

Reaper Man, Terry Pratchett

"By observing the trees and their embodied experience of time, I have been able to see the inadequacy of my wristwatch"

Until you're are late for your next teams or zoom call.

Interesting ideas wrapped in an insufferable, patronizing wrapper. Perhaps they could have found someone else to write this. Valuable concepts that are going to have a narrow audience.
