No US universities, I guess they can easily get way better paying internships.

14% of the participants are from the United States (second highest after India):

Well maybe that's because I've never even heard of the Summer of Code until right now, and I would've applied had the deadline not already passed. I wish they accepted late application, I would love to do open-source work!

Read about it and spread the word: http://www.google-melange.com/ :)

Yeah, I feel like there's no way they'll accept a late application a month and half late. Rough. Do you think there were any drop-outs that left an open spot? I think I could catch up to speed with the rest of the students quickly, they haven't really done actual work yet.

The policy is strict. No late submission.

Unfortunate, but understandable.

How much are internships usually paid in the US? For some parts of the world (developing, especially) the GSoC stipend is ridiculously high.

Internships in the Us pays 3000 to 7000 per month vs Gsoc which pays 5000 for 3 months.

That's high, many internships are min wage or even unpaid.

I believe the MECOP program at Oregon State sets a floor of $16. 40 hours a week * 4 weeks gives you $2560.

I've been told almost all get more which is good because that seems quite low.

University of Toronto is there - I would imagine Canadian students have similar internship opportunities.

They probably also have better internships (paying aside). I've been 4 times in GSoC and what I can tell you is that as far as I'm concerned this is the most interesting thing I can do over the summer.

An internship here involves at best, some random module in some offshore product, at worst a "hello world" type project in $insert_whatever_technology_the_company_happens_to_use.

I love hacking on FLOSS and I'm not that interested in how much I'm payed (as long as it's decent), but there's no way I could find a job where I could work on FLOSS on a 400miles radius. I guess this explains why so many eastern europeans and indians.

I might be wrong but my feeling is that here in the EU there are few to none hacker-friendly jobs.
