Like "oh wait", it seems to derive humour from its implicit logical rebuttal:

"But, Mr. Crockett Texas is hell."

In a similar vein, this also from the 19th Century: A woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a smoke.

"But, Mr. Kipling a good woman is a ... oh wait."
