My own upgrade took a similar path:

Mid 2000s 50" Panasonic Viera plasma: ~500W. Samsung late 2016 65" 8-series flat SUHD: ~200W.

You bring up an interesting point: most people have a much larger TV than they had in the 90s or 2000s, potentially offsetting any efficiency gains.
