Interesting idea! I don't see a direct analogy with how we communicate in the real world. So I wonder what use will emerge for that medium. Network sentiments?

Anonymity will be relative to how unique your behavior is among your address book contacts. Might become an awesome tool to educate people about the difficulty of anonymizing content...

Beautiful!! Someone should make large posters out of this.

The process gives it an artsy mechanical feel, as if we could see the sign of time and efforts these little things put in computations.

Intel used to make posters available (back in the Pentium-II days) and they were really cool. I used to have one that I had to leave behind at a previous job.

In the current copyright environment, I'm not sure they could be made available. Which stinks, as just looking at them & trying to figure out what the sections did (ALU, cache, registers, etc) is sort of inspiring.

Intel, AMD, Freescale, etc. should partner up with art.com or someone else who can print out large posters (and ship them wrinkle-free) Maybe donate any profits to a engineering-for-teens program of some kind.

I don't know about posters, but there is similar imagery in "Core Memory: A Visual Survey of Vintage Computers"

This article raises interesting observations. I find it fascinating to see how technology might be perceived as a distant animal. The tech industry, like most schools of thought, regularly faces the danger of becoming an Ivory tower, disconnected from the real-world. After all, technology bubbles hurt us all in the past. Similarly, technology is hard to understand, it is magical in a way, an alien tool. If you work in tech, don't be offended. Solnit is not claiming an absolute truth. She's raising awareness of potential collateral damage by tech companies.

Is this another exploitation of weak security questions? Or was the email account password set to "IAMPOTUS"?

Keep in mind that it was neither GWB or Bush Sr's accounts that were "hacked".

I Am "President of the United States" for anyone trying to put it together -- had to google that one.

And second in command to TOTUS. You will want to google that one, too.

This post disappeared from the HackerNews front page. What's going on? Flagged by admins?

Website is back up (for how long?). Registrar information is still erroneous tho.

Registrar shows nameservers as the compromised ones still, so I guess that's just on your end.

Besides making security/authentication even more critical, this challenges photo ownership. In Facebook terms of service, the photographer retains rights on their pictures, but transfer to Facebook certain rights to use the work. Want that?

I'm pretty sure the rights you give Facebook are basically the right for Facebook to display your photo to people you share it with. That's pretty much what any photo service would require you to consent to.

I did my trip last year. 21k and not a booking (not even planes). My only advice is: do not plan things that much.

Traveling is not a job. It is not about filling up a to do list. Of course there are specific things you want to see, but you should not turn your trip into a real-world travelling salesman problem. We all know it is NP-hard.

Travelling is about living experiences, meeting people that move you in some weird way. Be flexible. Be open. Forget travel agents. It is a life changing experience. Good luck everyone.

couldn't agree more, the things you book up front you will regret and wish you'd waited to arrange when you got there. 6 months in south america and the one thing I booked (machu picchu trek) was a constant annoyance to plan around. dont entirely rule out travel agents, they can offer even more flexibility in terms of flight changes, but stay well away from booking things in advance
