I was never officially taught Sütterlin, but through family and other circumstances I can read it fairly well after a bit of a "warm-up" period.
What's interesting is that it's pretty much impossible for me to read if used for a non-German language. Sütterlin for English text? My brain cannot parse this at all - the script automatically flips my brain to German!
That makes a lot of sense, given that in the Kurrent era it was actually considered proper to use a "Romance" (and hence "modern-looking") script even for non-Germanic loanwords in German text, mirroring the Fraktur/Antiqua distinction in print typesetting!
In a way, this could also be compared to the present-day use of katakana for loanwords and hiragana for native text in Japanese (which ironically only crystallised as a universal convention after WWII).
My (German) grandmother used to write me letters in English using this script. I didn't find it too difficult to read, probably because I understood the context (names of other family members, questions about my day-to-day activities, updates on her life in Germany).
Over the last years, I felt my handwriting was deteriorating. I blamed my lack of practice and reliance on computers, and accepted that.
But, last year I got glasses. With them, my hand writing quickly improved. As an aside, I can type a lot faster on a touch screen now too. Presbyopia snuck up on me somewhere when I hit 40...
One solution nobody has mentioned is filming in another country. While there probably are laws restricting the "foreign" currency reproductions, I'd think it's unlikely the authorities in, say, Canada would spend nearly as much effort going after prop US currency as the Secret Service would in The States.
Canada might. They're pretty tight with the US, and fake US currency is still a diplomatic problem for them. Film in Iran, however, and they probably wouldn't care at all.
Yeah, agreed. Plenty of places will accept US currency at par with Canadian, and many cashiers have no idea how to check if the money is genuine, if they check at all.
A flood of fake US $20s in Vancouver could really screw people over.
Definitely a translation, or written by a non-native English speaker. Things like using a comma as a decimal (0,03 liters) are a pretty big giveaway.
I think what threw me the most was how SI and US units were mixed right in the title (liters and miles).

Sounds like most online news sites. And I see many errors (uncorrected typos) in articles written by professional journalists using their first language, and even after a proofread from an editor!
Very surprising how long it took them to enter the U.S. market, especially given that they were in North America (Canada) long before.
It'd be interesting to know more about how that decision was made, and also if this has shaped the general perception of Ikea in Canada vs. The States.
I attended the grand opening of the first Ikea in the USA in Plymouth Meeting PA as a little kid. (The chart says Conshohocken, thats actually a new store they opened recently)
Because my mom is British she knew what it was already and was geeking out but nobody else seemed as excited. I was really young but I kind of remember the opening being a pretty lavish affair without many people in attendance.
For simple builds with dependencies, I find makefiles hard to beat. The only thing that has me pulling out my hair every time is the whole tabs vs. spaces thing, especially when on a machine that I haven't pulled in my .vimrc yet.
