I found this product awhile back and was so excited at first.
I have a design background ( but can dabble in css, hack at php and python) but had trouble trying to get some APIs connected and displayed with Bubble.
Please oh please, can one of you developers have Airtable and Webflow make a baby? This combo would be amazing for functional business use and data display and I would pay good money for it.
I agree — as someone with as much of a design background as a programming background, seeing something like Bubble described as "visual programming" feels a bit offensive. Yes, there's a bit of meaningful visual structure sprinkled here and there throughout their environment. But it's nothing like what one would imagine if they were left to freely ideate about some hypothetical, ideal "visual programming" environment.
In a post-Bret Victor world, we know what such an environment might look like.
As a visually-minded developer constantly hunting for such tools, and even working on some myself (in a small way — nothing that anyone here will ever end up using, surely), I can assure you that there's enough smoke that eventually we'll see something like what we desire catch fire.
If I had to guess, I'd say we'll see it come out of the world of video games, not web applications. So don't fret that Bubble looks like a step in the wrong direction. They're not building tools for visual thinkers, they're building tools for MBAs.
I like the site idea, and was about to pull the trigger but your payment processing scared me away.
I can't tell if you use https, and the Stripe processing page is just an email landing page......Get that up with Paypal or the like and you will have at least one more customer.
Thanks for the feedback! I'll be adding SSL just as soon as I get through all of the orders this post has generated :). The payment is secure even without SSL server-side because Stripe uses a JavaScript form to process the payments which means that your credit card information never touches my server.
I have to say as a designer this site seems like a nice change of pace....Looking at design porn all day that I can never afford can be a real drag and a turn off from the industry in general.
Having a place to go where I can put my ooogling where my wallet is definitely nice and the domain name (for whatever reasonably priced means) is very sticky.
Are the order size limitations influenced more buy the capabilities of the designer/distributors or on keeping with the Woot like discount feel?
I am currently living in Seoul for short term and we are always talking about how this social segment is really missing outside of specific online community meetups.
Overall, I think this is really cool concept and on the right track. Currently, I would like to drill down first by Location/Region followed by interests and then have you show me who fits those two criteria. If there are too many matches I would refine/add more and if too few pull back on my interest selections.
I saw this article and took the plunge on one of my sites. It took the standard time for the DNS to update and I was up and running shortly after. It maintains all of your MX records, etc and I did see a jump on Google Page Speed Score (went from 81-87) after installing.
One of the side benefits was their one click "apps" where you can install Google Analytics, etc and manage it from one place.
I did have one question that I didn't see a clear answer for. If I am using Amazon's Cloudfront for many of my images, how does the Pro account handle the caching of these seemingly conflicting services?
Honestly, when we start talking about these huge distances and the vastness of space, the scale of things just seems to lose all meaning. Maybe it's because most of us are engineers and these sorts of numbers only exist in our heads in abstract terms, but I find that I really have to look around me and ground myself in relative terms before I can fully grasp how mind-bogglingly huge that is.
