I 100% agree. They need to be much harsher and will lead to a regime change soon. But not in Russia, but in Germany (AfD), UK (Farage) and France (LePen), as predicted by Emmanuell Todd. ;-)

...how can you wish for such a thing?

Well, I hope they pay you well to come online and write this nonsense. If you're writing this out of your own free will without compensation then that's just sad.

Trump would be happy if the UK joins the US. With Canada. And Greenland. ;-)

"There's a big difference between having something explained to you and developing expertise in it."

No, there isn't. You get things explained in University. Then you build on top of this knowledge.

That's not at all how university works.

You are explained things (least important part) and then you invest substantial amounts of time in practicing and exercising those new skills.

Then, in your junior level jobs, the same cycle repeats.

That exercise component isn't going to happen in university with AI in the loop, because AI will be able to shortcut basic practice.

And it isn't going to happen in junior level work, because AI will be able to do those jobs more economically efficiently.

"Not everything moved. Cloudflare is a US company, I still use it, and I’m at peace with that."

I am not. THe cancer of the Internet. Sometimes Cloudflare does not work abroad. It is annoying.

"Here’s the reasoning: Cloudflare sits in front of my public-facing websites. Its job is to cache, protect against DDoS attacks,"

If your host has no protection against DDoS then find a better host.

You can find very cheap CDN, if you really need them. Likely you dont.

As a word of caution, Cloudflare can have a devastating effect on SEO if you are not a paying customer and serve your stuff from your own URL. Cloudflare allows this only for paid accounts.

I found the computer in the article more interesting than the fact, that gaming is getting faster under Linux.

Interesting, but I wish it was half the size folded...

I hated it too because I had a shitty soldering iron. Could have used a ironing iron instead, so shitty was it.

Use this, stop complaining: https://www.cnx-software.com/2022/07/29/pinecil-v2-soldering...

Pinecil RISC-V soldering iron with the Pinecil V2 featuring a new Bouffalo Lab BL706 RISC-V microcontroller with Bluetooth LE connectivity, optimizations for higher power levels, as well as tentative support for the new USB PD EPR standard (Extended Power Range) working at up to 28V.

26 USD: https://pine64.com/product/pinecil-smart-mini-portable-solde...

It runs IronOS - Open Source Flexible Firmware for Soldering Hardware

I picked up soldering around the time lead-free solder started being required in the EU, so imagine my frustration when suddenly stuff stopped unsoldering like it should.

Of course a lot of electronics were compliant before 2006, but that point in time marked the moment when even the most suspicious dropshipped Chinese items had to use it and suddenly you needed way more heat to do the same things.

they put RISC-V in a soldering iron?

Sure, why not?

It's OK to have fun with tools.

I was going for a "they performed surgery on a grape" thing but it seems I missed the mark

No shit. And an Open OS. It works great.

A buddy sent me the link. Looks interesting, I am going to check it out. I am not aware it was on HN before. Maybe some people here have an opinion about it.

Most people don't know, that "prediction markets" are acutally based on an idea by DARPA in 2002, after 9/11/2001.

> Most people don't know, that "prediction markets" are acutally based on an idea by DARPA in 2002, after 9/11/2001.

Did they then use a time machine to go back to the mid-90's to pass the idea to Jim Bell so he could take the fall for some of the less attractive possible outcomes?

Prediction markets, by any reasonable definition, existed long before 2002.

Yeah. People have put together a Prediction Market Database [1] (in a Google sheet), I think it's pretty well sourced and shows a good number of both real money and play money prediction markets from before 2002.

DARPA did have a big role though, too.

Why the downvote?

You can fly to the EU for 600 USD (retour), more in high season. Non business people are willing to spend 1200, 1400 USD. I assume around 2000 USD the demand will fall off significantly. At 5000 USD for economy it will be close to zero.

I just booked for the fall to London. Roundtrip was around $1200 from eastern US in economy with a couple of minor upgrades which is high but not ridiculous. The increment is basically a couple nights of hotels and meals. I've paid more; I've paid less. Was going to take ship back but it wasn't available for one person.
